The summer of Scotland

Since I've been here in Glasgow, there's not much chance I've seen the sun out. Even though it is supposed to be summer now. All I've been experienceing are cold, rainy, windy days. Ive' even been sick due to that for the past few days. Got an infection in the airways. Well, I've recovered. Finally today, the sun is shining ever so brightly and the weather is just fine. Just like in an air conditioned building. Oh wait, I've have to explain that that's the air conditioned building back home in Malaysia I'm talking about, where when it's air conditioned to keep us cool. Here, the system is in reverse. In which, when the air conditioner is turned off, the whole building turns cold. Taadaa!!!

Back on today's weather. The sun is out, bright, though cloudy, but it's the best summer's day I've seen in Glasgow so far. Just finished my lab session. Have to start revising as they teach 130 pages of course notes per day on lecture days, and full lab session on lab days. So I'll have to do speed reading or spend the weekends locked in a room in order to complete my revision. Well Good luck to me then!!!

Class starts

For the past few days, from since I'm in Glasgow up till yesterday, my housemates and I, no wait, I think maybe I could include everyone, ok, everyone was busy hunting for cheap groceries and cheap clothes. As a result, blisters for everyone, haha just joking. Well partly joking, I developed some on my leg due walking. That's it, we've been walking, walking and walking. Oh, not only that, we've also been walking while carrying very very heavy stuffs. That's it. Hai... the places where we can get cheap goods are usually very far away from where we stay and since when things are cheap, we'd like to stock them up. Because of this, I've also developed tired shoulders and pain in the back.

Besides, I've been cooking quite a number of meals now... and I finally understand why mom always complaint "don't know what to cook". Thinking of what to cook for the next meal is really troublesome, even more troublesome than cooking. By the way, food seems to be the constant problem we have in this place. It's hard work to get the food back to our place and even after stocking our foodstuffs up, everything seems to go quickly.

Enough of that, class started today, and for this semester, we'll be having labs and lectures from 9 to 5. That's like working, only it's in reverse where we pay the university instead of getting paid. I'm adapting to the weather I guess. Don't feel so cold anymore. Well, yes it's summer here now, but still it's very very cold. The winds here are piercing. If ever it rains, it's be like a large number of needles poking through you. One thing I notice about the weather here though. IT'S TOTALLY UNPREDICTABLE. When the sky is cloudy and dark, you might be expecting it to rain, but then, after some strong, cold winds, the sun comes out and it's hot. When the sun touches your skin it really burns. However, not long after the sun is out, the sky might go dark again and it might start to rain. This rain will stop immediately as soon as the sun is out and continues when the sky is dark. This process is not spanned at a long period but happens quickly. So it means that, one moment you see the bright sunshine when you open your window, but by the time you turn and walk out the door, it have started to rain -_-" See!, that impredictable.

Ok, enough bullshitting for today. Got to get some sleep. Class tomorrow.

In Scotland

Finally I've settled down with an internet connection in my own room. Let me see, how shall I start. Well, lets start from when we arrive at the airport. After a long tiring 12 hours flight with 2 transits, we've finally reached the airport in Glasgow. The tiring part about long distance flight is when we have to carry our heavy bags around during transit. Besides, I did not get good sleep during the flight. Anyways, the weather here in Glasgow is really great, cooling, but occasionally, strong winds can really make you shiver. After 2 and a half days here, I'm still not used to the season here. It's summer, and the sun only sets at 11 at night. When we take a stroll out, it would feel like an evening walk. So, I have to live by the watch. Sleeping at specific hours. Interestingly, we've not suffered from jet lag. I think it's because on the first day, we were so tired of carrying stuffs up to our rooms, everyone slept with ease the first night.

Glasgow is a beautiful and big city. To walk from one place to another is really something. For instance, we need to take a 10 minutes walk from our rooms to the nearest Tesco to buy our groceries. So, we get plenty of exercise. The cool weather allows us to walk long distance without sweating, which is a good thing. However, the weather still couldn't help us relief our muscle aches at the end of the day. The architecture of the buildings here are also beautiful.

Food here are cheap, IF you are earning your pounds here. When a Malaysian like myself wants to eat, we'll have to think twice, as the conversion can really kill you. So, now, I've been training myself to eat less. However, I think whatever food we eat, goes into energy we use to get to the place to get the food itself. So it's a 1+1-1=1 sort of thing, nothing really stays as energy for long.

The night time here is cold, but we have a heater in every room and I do switch it on at night so I won't get too cold. The accommodation here is not bad besides the inconvinient design. I'll show you when I'm able to.

Classes starts on Monday and it'll be just the Malaysian students for this summer. We'd only meet the rest of the class in September. Hmmm... can't wait to meet them. Anyway's I'll also be trying to get a job then, when the schedule is not so packed.

Ok I think I need to sleep now. Tomorrow morning the seniors would bring us to the so called China Town of Glasgow, which my friends who have seen the place today, confirmed that the place is actually the size of a warehouse. Ok then, Goodnight. Ohh and during summer, the sun rises at around 4 to 5 in the morning.

Last night before I leave

Tomorrow, I shall leave to Scotland to further my studies. For a year I'll be away from my family and close friends. Just yesterday, my relatives from Ipoh left, heading back to Ipoh. They came down to bid farewell and also there ways a dinner to attend. Anyways tonight, my close friends had asked me out to have a drink and to chat for the last time before I leave for the faraway land. My parents were asleep at home and I guess I might have just spend the night chatting rather than staying at home staring at empty space.

We went to a different place this time. Not the usual 'ming tien' in Taman Megah, but KLFC in Kuchai Lama. After some time chatting, which I remembered was about 2 to 3 hours of nonsense, we finally bid each other farewell. Feeling heavy in the heart to leave my close friends and especially my parents. However, it's only going to be one year, neither too long nor too short. Still I'm having mixed feelings about leaving to Scotland. A part of me is excited to go (the bigger part). Another part of me feels otherwise. Hmm... we'll see what the future holds then. Tomorrow shall be a new beginning.
